The Aquarium at La Rochelle

The entrance into the display area of the aquarium is an elevator. A pretend elevator. They close the doors behind you and it shakes and rattles, and the pictures in the fake windows of the elevator go up, so you feel like you’re going down. Then the adjacent doors open and you’re supposed to leave the elevator and head to the exhibits. I was so fascinated by the pictures in the windows I didn’t leave the elevator when I was supposed to, and had to wait until the next group arrived before the doors would open again. I got a double ride on the elevator! Just a little old lady trying to navigate this modern world.

I don’t care for the term “world class”, but this is definitely that class. The fish all seem pretty happy and they are certainly wonderful to look at. This is a video where you can see the movement they have in some of the tanks.

This next photo is a sign that confused me. I was all excited that I was going to get to see my children! I went to the other side and they weren’t there. A mean trick to play on an old woman. (I really wanted to go through the children’s way but felt I didn’t meet the criteria.). 🙂

This is the floor and it’s really cool. You step on it and the fish all scatter away from you! I could have played there for ages. You can see I just stepped because the fish are all on the other side. How do they do that?!! I tell you, I’m just not up with today’s technology – but these guys sure are.

An area of smaller exhibits. Like you’re in an underwater cave.I was trying to catch the brown guy on the right. I got him in focus in the second picture. They keep moving! He had such personality.

These are the thoughtful fish. (Not the ichthyologistically correct name.)

This guy was hilarious. I’ve seen cartoons, but they really exist! He was jumping up and down on his little fin legs and smiling the whole time.

They had big fish, little fish, non fish, and everything else. A wonderful place to spend an afternoon. I don’t know if it rains in La Rochelle, but if it did, I’d go to the aquarium. Then, near the end, there’s this rope suspension bridge. There’s an elevator option but why take it unless you have to. The bridge was bouncy and fun, and it went over a tank of piraña.I think this might be a step in the evolution of creatures from sea to land. It’s a fish that can spend time out of water. He’s pretty hard to see. He’s dark and near the middle of the photo.

Hope you enjoyed that. I certainly did.

Love you all.

  1. I can imagine being seven and walking through these displays. Heck, I’m almost ten times that and I’d like to do it. Wonderful photos and video, Marion!

  2. I love the little guy jumping up and down on his little fin legs and smiling all the time!!
